This is a work of fiction, though some of the people in it may have been real, and some of the experiences may have actually happened. I'll leave it to your imagination to decide what (or who) was real and what (or who) was not.
Nobody in this story was underage when they had sex.
Maricel woke up this morning happy. Not only was it her birthday, but her cousin Ben told her that he was going to introduce her to a nice American man today. Ever since she had graduated from Bato National High School in the spring, she had been at a loss for what to do with her life.
She didn't want to end up married to one of the standbys in the village. 'Standby' was what any unemployed guy who hung around the little neighborhood stores drinking beer all day long was called, and there were plenty of those around. Most had no more ambition than to trap a woman who would service their sexual needs and support them while they sat around and drank.
Every one of the standbys that she knew thought that they were God's gift to women, and they often flirted with her whenever she passed by the sari-sari stores where they hung out. In the beginning, it was just teasing, and she knew it, but lately they were starting to realize that she had become a beautiful young woman, and it became obvious that they really desired her. Anyway, that was not what she wanted. If she got involved with one of them, she would end up pregnant and poor for the rest of her life.
Maricel had heard that American men took good care of their wives, and that they were much gentler and more understanding than most Filipinos were with their wives. Because she only had a basic public-school education, Maricel knew that she could never land a job in the Philippines, other than maybe as a domestic servant, so she thought that marriage was probably her only real option.
Yes, she had her high school diploma, but Filipino employers always wanted more education before they would hire somebody (even for an entry-level position). People with accounting degree were working as cashiers in stores or working the counter at Jollibee. With so many people out of work in the Philippines, employers had their pick of job applicants and could do whatever they wanted. Since her family had no money, there was no chance that she could earn a higher degree because she couldn't pay for it.
Therefore, the only good option she had was to marry well. All other options would lead to a lifetime of poverty. An American man would be the best of all options, since upper-class Filipinos seldom looked twice at a Filipina who hadn't been born into an upper-class family as marriage material. It just wasn't done. Upper-class men might take a poor girl as a lover on the side, but they wouldn't marry her, and if they dropped her, she would be ruined.
For that reason, Maricel knew that she had to make the best of this opportunity. From what her cousin had told her, the American she was meeting was quite a bit older than her, but that was OK. Many Filipinas married men who were much older. It was considered a good thing ... because he would be more financially stable and probably more patient with his wife.
She went into the CR (bathroom) in her family's small seaside house to bathe herself. She was lucky that they had at least some indoor plumbing, so she didn't have to carry water to the house for a bath. Most other nipa huts in their village had no indoor plumbing. She closed the CR door, removed her nightgown, and hung it on a wall hook next to her dress.
Their CR had a toilet, a small sink and a faucet on the wall for filling tubs for bathing and for flushing the toilet. Baths normally involved scooping water from a tub with a small handled scoop called a tabo, and then pouring the water over her head and body. That first tabo of water was always the hardest to take because there was no hot or even warm water in the house. Therefore, every bath was with cold water. After the initial shock, it wasn't too bad, though.
Once she was totally wet, Maricel soaped herself up and put shampoo in her hair. She didn't always shampoo her hair because it took so long for her long hair to dry. This day was different. She wanted to look and smell her very best and make the very best impression she could.
After she had shampooed or washed everyplace on her body, she once again picked up the tabo to thoroughly rinse herself. That wasn't easy while sitting on a small plastic stool, but she didn't want to splash. She had splurged the day before, and bought a couple of sachets of cream rinse for her hair. Tearing the packets, she poured the liquid into her hair and combed it through to ensure full coverage. She wanted her long hair (which came down past her bottom) to be silky smooth and shiny.
As she dried herself off with the towel, Maricel stood up and looked at herself in the small bathroom mirror. Would this man like what he saw? Certainly, she didn't have anything special. She thought of herself as a typical Filipina. She was short and thin, measuring gaziantep escort five-foot-tall and weighing about 100 pounds. She didn't have big breasts. Hers were barely B-cups. But she had nice peso-coin-sized brown areolas and small raspberry shaped nipples that stood tall when she was cold. She had heard that men liked that.
She had caramel-colored skin, which she wished was lighter. She chuckled to herself. It seemed that all of the Filipinas she knew wished that they had lighter skin. All of the ads in the Philippines showed very pale women, so that had become the standard of beauty in the throughout the country. However, she was mostly satisfied with her skin and figured that a good man would either not care about that or would like her just the way she was. In a perfect world, he would like her for what she was, and NOT just for her skin color.
Many Filipinas used skin lighteners daily to try to achieve a paler shade of skin, but she couldn't afford that. Nor did she care about it. This new man would either like her for what she was or he wouldn't. All of her life, Maricel had strived to just be herself, and she wasn't going to change that this day. She would just be the best that she could without making any radical changes.
Hanging her towel on its hook, she turned to where she had hung her clothes. At least she had decent clothes. Even though she shopped at second-hand clothing shops (called okai-okai), she had been able to dress herself for not much money by being patient and very picky in what she bought. That was very important because her family didn't have much money at all.
Maricel's father was a small-time fisherman, so while they seldom went hungry, they didn't ever have a lot of money. Most of the money that they did have went to buying things like rice, cooking oil and seasonings.
Her father would paddle his small outrigger canoe (called a bangka) out into the Tañon Strait (between the islands of Cebu and Negros) in the predawn hours and would often be out to sea all day before returning to their small home. If he was lucky, he would bring home a good catch and possibly sell part of it for a decent price. Maricel always worried about his safety, and she was always happy to see him paddling back to shore late in the afternoon.
Maricel slipped on her one pair of fancy lace panties and matching lace bra. All of her other underwear was white cotton and plain, and even though nobody else (other than her sisters and mother) had ever seen her in her undies since she had been a little girl, it made her feel sexier just to be wearing nice lingerie under her dress.
Next, she turned to her dress. It was a mid-calf-length sun dress, with a subtle floral design. Maricel had always dressed conservatively, and this dress was no exception. While most sundresses had spaghetti shoulder straps, this one had wider shoulder straps that would cover her bra straps. She had always avoided dresses with spaghetti straps because she thought it looked cheap for a woman to let her bra straps show.
Of course, Maricel had never even considered not wearing a bra. It was pounded in Filipinas' heads at a young age that women who didn't wear bras were sluts, and that no good man would ever want to marry them. She wanted a good man, so she dressed accordingly. Thinking about the man she was about to meet, she whispered to herself, "I hope you like the way I look."
She looked at herself in the mirror as she slowly combed through her long beautiful hair. It was amazingly silky this day, and she was very happy that she had splurged on hair conditioner. Her hair was shiny enough to be in a hair commercial. She had always been proud of her long straight hair, which hung down past her bottom.
Turning around one more time, Maricel was finally satisfied with how she looked. She seldom ever wore any makeup, but she did apply a little lipstick to make her lips pop. She had heard that men thought a woman with colored lips looked more fertile. While she had never worried much about that, she wanted to do everything possible to impress this new American man that her cousin Ben was bringing to meet her, while not radically changing anything in her appearance. She wanted him to like her for herself.
Maricel didn't have a lot of choices for footwear. It was either flip flops (called slippers) or flats (called ballerina shoes). Since she usually wore her ballerinas to Mass on Sundays, she decided on them for what she hoped would be a special day. She twirled and liked what she saw. Her appearance made her smile, and although she was never completely satisfied with how she looked, she hoped that he would really like what he saw.
Jon was a retired US Air Force officer. He had spent 24 years in the military, rising from the rank of airman basic to major during his career. He rose quickly through the ranks and was given the opportunity of becoming a commissioned officer due to his expertise. He had been married as an NCO, but his American wife never seemed to be happy with anything he did. She didn't like his assignments, and she especially didn't like it when he got sent to the sandbox (what the military called the Middle East) alone.
After just a few years of marriage, she filed for divorce, and left him. Luckily, the only thing she wanted out of the marriage was herself, since she actually made more money than he did at the time, so the divorce didn't really impact him financially.
It did, however, impact him emotionally. He decided that he didn't want another American woman who only thought about herself and never considered his needs. He didn't want another relationship where he was only there to serve her needs. He wanted a traditional marriage like his mother and father had, one where the man supported the family, and where the woman supported her husband. He just wasn't sure where he would find that, so he wrote off getting married as long as he remained in the Air Force.
When he retired from the Air Force, Jon decided to travel outside of the US, hoping that he would find what he was looking for in a traditional wife. He liked the tropics, but he disliked the desert. That narrowed his search. He had done quite a bit of research, and that brought him to the Philippines. Specifically, it brought him to the island of Cebu.
He liked the look of the women in the Philippines (Filipinas) and especially those in the Visayan Islands that were between Luzon and Mindanao. They were thin (unlike most women in the US), and he loved the caramel color of their skin. The fact that English was one of the two official languages in the Philippines didn't hurt either. He found that most Filipinas could understand English fairly well. That way, he wouldn't have to worry about a language barrier like he would in many other tropical countries.
He had been living on Cebu for a few months when he decided to move to the west side of the island. The Cebu City metro area was just too crowded and congested for his tastes. He preferred the quiet life found in the smaller villages and towns. That was how he came to live in Toledo and how he met Maricel's cousin Ben.
Jon didn't work, per se. He was retired and had a decent pension from his service in the Air Force. It wasn't huge, but it was more than adequate living on Cebu. In fact, he was saving money every month. He was only using a little over half of what his pension gave him, and the rest was kept either in his savings account back in the US or in a savings account he had established in the Philippines.
He did have some big investment accounts back in the US. Since he had been a single officer who didn't really party and didn't have any obligations, he had stashed (and invested) a lot of money during his career. Now, his investments amounted to a pretty sizable nest egg. He did have to manage his investments, so he spent a little bit of time online most days.
He bought a motorcycle soon after arriving on Cebu. It wasn't just one of the little motorbikes that were ubiquitous on the islands, but a big Kawasaki Vulcan. It still gave him good mobility around the islands, but it didn't really give him enough maneuverability for city streets in the metro area where motorbikes dodged in and out of traffic, finding any opening to squeeze through to get ahead. Little motorbikes could squeeze through. His big motorcycle sometimes couldn't.
The streets there were just too crowded in the city, and if you couldn't maneuver around and through traffic, then you were stuck in traffic waiting. It was the biggest reason why he moved to the west side of the island, but it was definitely a reason. Traffic in the city was just too frustrating, and he preferred riding in the countryside anyway. The big Kawasaki was a comfortable ride for long trips on the islands. It was easy to take ferries between islands
Once he got settled into an apartment in Toledo, Jon made it a point to get to know the area and get to know his neighbors. That was how he came to know Ben. Ben was the owner and mechanic in a neighborhood motorcycle shop close to Jon's apartment, and after a few visits to Ben's shop, he was the only person that Jon would let work on his ride.
Ben never disappointed Jon, which was unusual in the Philippines, where people often did only what was absolutely necessary and most didn't even know what good service was. The two men developed a good business relationship, and after a while, they developed a friendship.
After a couple of months of working together, Ben thought highly enough of Jon to introduce him to his family. He knew that many of his female cousins were looking for an American to marry, but most of them weren't good enough for his friend Jon. Unfortunately, many Filipinas just wanted to marry an American husband for his money, and some of his female cousins were like that as well.
Ben had come to know Jon as a good man, and he wanted Jon to have a good woman beside him. His cousin Maricel fit that bill. She was a good, traditional woman with good, conservative values, which was what he knew that Jon was looking for. It didn't hurt that Maricel was also drop-dead gorgeous (at least by western standards).
Maricel was also barely an adult, having just graduated from high school, and therefore, she was still moldable, so if Jon wanted to change anything about her, he probably could. Ben didn't worry about that much, though, because he knew Jon well enough to know that Maricel was pretty much exactly what Jon was looking for in a woman.
Ben visited Maricel to see if she would be interested before broaching the subject with Jon. "Maricel, I have an American friend who I think would be absolutely perfect for you. Would you like to meet him?" he asked.
She was very interested. In fact, she was very excited about the prospects of an American coming into her life. She had been praying that she would meet a good man soon, and this seemed to be an answer to that prayer. However, she wanted to know more about this man. "I am interested, but I need to know more about him," she replied.
Ben went on to tell Maricel everything he knew about Jon. "He is in his mid-forties, was an officer in the US Air Force, and is now retired and looking for a good traditional Filipina wife. I'm not sure where he wants to live permanently, but he seems quite happy living in Toledo right now."
"He rides a big Kawasaki motorcycle here, so it is obvious that he is stable financially. Obviously, I don't know what his exact finances are, but he isn't poor. He has a nice apartment in Toledo with a huge bed, which he said he bought planning ahead for when he gets married. His apartment has nice furnishings and decorations too. It seems like everything is new and very high quality.
"From what Jon described in what he thought a perfect wife would be, I immediately thought of you. He wants a traditional wife who lets him be the head of the household, and provide whatever the family needs, while she supports him in everything to do with home life. He also wants a wife who isn't obsessed with changing herself to match some stupid ideal that nobody can attain, but is flexible enough to change if her husband wanted that change. I think the two of you would be a perfect match."
Once Ben knew that Maricel would be interested, he asked Jon if he might be interested in his young cousin. He described her and even showed Jon a few pictures of Maricel. Ben told Jon that she lived with her parents and four sisters in the small village of Bato, just south of Toledo, and that he would introduce him to Maricel if Jon was interested. Jon looked at Maricel's pictures and listened to Ben's description of her, and he knew immediately that he was very interested in this girl. He had Ben set up a meeting for the following Saturday.
Saturday morning dawned bright and sunny, which was unusual for the west side of the island. It usually started out somewhat foggy due to all of the Mangrove swamps in the area, but this morning was blue and bright. Being on the west side of Cebu island (which had a tall mountain range running down the middle of it), sunrises were seldom very good, but sunsets were often spectacular. Jon took the beautiful morning as a sign of good things to come.
Jon showered, shaved, and splashed on after-shave, wanting to look and smell his best for this introduction. He didn't need to worry. Ben had showed Maricel some pictures of Jon, and she thought he was very handsome. Ben told her quite a bit about Jon, so she already knew that he was a retired Air Force officer living in Toledo.
Maricel also knew that he was a very good man. Ben told her that he wouldn't want to introduce Jon to her if he wasn't a good man. Ben thought very highly of Maricel and only wanted the best for her. This had made Maricel blush when Ben told her of his regard for her, which just confirmed his previous assessment of her.
Dressed in a button-down dress shirt and slacks, Jon went outside to his motorcycle. He put his helmet on (even though the helmet rule wasn't really enforced on this side of the island), and rode over to Ben's place. Ben got on his own bike, and the two of them rode south to Bato.
It was after ten when they arrived at Maricel's home. Jon parked his motorcycle and dismounted. He marveled at the beautiful setting the little nipa hut was in, being right next to the beach with nothing to obstruct the view. Once he removed his helmet, they walked up to the front door and knocked.
Maricel's little sister, Amy, answered the door and invited them in. The inside was small, which was unavoidable given how small the house was. Maricel checked herself one last time in the mirror and exited the CR (comfort room). Her face lit up in a smile when she saw her cousin Ben and Jon.
Ben introduced Jon to Maricel first. They talked for a few minutes, and Ben sent Amy over to the neighborhood sari-sari store to pick up some Coke for all of them. When she returned a minute later, they all sat at the table and drank Coke while they talked for a while. Maricel's mother was in the kitchen cooking and listening to the conversation. She liked what she was hearing.
